Falling in Love With Your Clothes

Source

Do you fall in love, or get infatuated with your clothes? (I am not comparing this love to the Real Thing: none of us loves our clothes the way we love our children, husbands and pets . . . I hope). But I mean, do you get crushes on your clothing, and then how does it work out?

Like romances with lovers, romance with clothes can be a hot, sweet affair: the faux fur vest, open-toe shooties, wide yellow belt. I was crazy, crazy for statement pendants for a while, then I fell out of love. I'll still wear them once in a while when the mood strikes, but the heat is gone.

Sometimes we fall in love with potential. Our mothers warned us about this (with regard to men, anyway). Unless you're a skilled re-fashioner, most garments aren't going to become just-right for us if the lines, color and shape are all-wrong at the start. We might do better leaving the potential at the shop and moving on.

We also have to beware of falling simply for a name. Not all designer labels are worthy of our love. Versace makes gorgeous pieces, but they mostly don't suit my life or style, not even taking price into account. It's like choosing the man just because he's a CEO. Great guy, perhaps, but not necessarily a great match in love.

Some wardrobe love affairs are meant to last: your best, best leather boots, tailored blazer, cashmere v-neck, and silk blouse, for example. For me, it's my skinny jeans, gold dolphin earrings, black Aldo boots, and black pencil skirt.

I still love you little guys, twenty years later. (Similar)

I think it's wonderful to have all varieties of clothing-love in our lives. Clothes should be fun and flattering. I enjoy the little skip in my heartbeat when I spot something beautiful, whether it's forever or for right-now.  I continue to let my "crushes" lead me astray now and then, and that's how I keep learning.

What say you? Do you follow your heart? Are you a more logical, disciplined wardrober? No wrong answers, of course, just different ways to approach the closet.

  1. oh, I follow my heart all the way! I rarely buy name brands because I would get tired of it and feel bad about spending money. I like to follow the trends but, tone it down a bit to fit my personal style too. Gotta follow my heart!

I definitely fall in love with clothes.  There are some clothes that I'm just so-so about, but that I know will work well with my closet, I'll get a lot of use out of, etc.  And then their are clothes that I absolutely LOVE from first sight.  My lion earrings are my most recent love-purchase.

  6. I follow my heart most of the time, but sometimes I need the tried and true as well.  I realized recently that I have two modes of shopping: bargain shopping and the Quest.  Bargain shopping is when I fall in love with lots of crazy things.  Some become enduring love affaires, some are one night stands.  The Quest brings specific things to love into my wardrobe.  Sometimes I get it wrong, but usually these are the good friends in my closet.  Is it mad, passionate love?  No, but it doesn't need to be.

Thanks so much for this post!  Ive been thinking a lot recently about why I shop and why I buy what I buy.  I think looking at it like a romance really helps me sort out my feelings on the subject. Thanks!

  7. I find that I fall into serial monogamy. I find or re-discover some piece of clothing and just wear it every different way for weeks at a time. I have to remind myself to play the field a bit and wear more of what's in my closet :)

  9. I do get crushes on my clothes...the kind of "love affair" that harmlessly leaves the rest of your life intact!  Haven't really fallen for buying things because of a label, although I will confess to avoiding some labels.  Last winter, it was a sweater coat made in Iceland and I loved the pattern in it.  I love my Uggs moccasins too.

  10. I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes I fall in love with something but it only has the same effect on someone else. The key is knowing what is flattering on you.

  11. I have many clothing loves and those are the itemss that have passed the test of time.  Shoes particularly, when they fit just right and you can walk for hours and your feet aren't screaming - that's love for me :-). I try to be logical, but can get carried away and a little impulsive.  I'm not a brand name person as such and do look more for quality of material and cut of the garment, which is more because of my budget, however, I must admit, if I could afford certain brands I'd consider buying them just for the hell of it.

I changed my url and have done some moving ... please come visit me when you have a moment.

Always love visiting you Patti ... hope you're doing fantastic.  Huggles

  12. Nice blog post!  There are some of my wardrobe pieces that I love, some that I like, and some that I have a love-hate relationship with!  Meaning, I love them, but wouldn't wear them anymore, but can't bear to part with!!

  13. If I may do so I want to add another kind of love ,the one I feel for my clothes the last few months.I haven't made any major buys  and I wear the clothes I already have. What I discovered is that I find possibilities I never knew existed ,It;s like getting to know my clothes better and like my clothes reveal their true self to me. It feels like getting over the romance stage and going inti deeper love. It all happens because there comes no distraction from the outside world (shopping).

  16. I do love clothes, and I must say I follow my heart. It depends on what kind of mood I am in that day on what I wear. I have a different style every day. I always tell my friends to try not to let themselves go because they are tired or don't have time for themselves. Picking out that outfit that I love gives me pride in myself even if their are many things going on around me.

  17. I fall in love with the idea of clothes all of the time, never mind if they love me back or not.  It's the ones that I love AND that look good on me that I have serious relationships with.  Not monogamous.  But serious.

  18. I absolutely fall in love with clothes! When I first buy something fantastic, I wear it all the time. I can't get enough: very much an infatuation. Other items, it's a long-term comfortable romance.

  19. oh man, i totally fall in love with my clothes and shoes too.  i'll find them, love them, and wear them for a few months.  but i'm not a good lover and often tire of them quickly then move on to the next.

  20. This is fun to ponder.  Hmmm, let's see.  I definitely go in waves, loving specific looks or silhouettes for a time, then abandoning them for something else.

I do know when I refashion clothes, especially from my closet, I try to assess what I still love about the piece, retain that feature , and change the rest.  Sometimes it works.  At least it doesn't cost a lot to give it a try!

  21. I definitely follow my heart, but it IS tempered with "keeping it real!".  I think it takes a mixture of both.....some of the pieces that I love the most are so over the top (for me) that I'm at a loss as to how to wear them.  So the practical items help to temper the over the top loves!  Hugs! ~Serene

  22. My love for animal prints is eternal, as is my love for red lipstick and neon.

I go through phases of wearing one thing all the time because I'm so into it and/or it's on the floor by my bed and easy to put on in the morning. I can't remember when I've last gotten something that I've come to dislike. That said, I do put certain things away for years at a time and bring them out when I'm newly excited for them. And then I wear them all the time for a month.

  23. Guilty, guilty, guilty!  I've fallen in love with clothes to the point that it's become hard to part with them after I've outgrown them, or worn them out.  And I've fallen in love with potential too, and bought something only to end up with it sitting in my closet doing nothing.  I think I do that last thing a lot with shoes, haha!

  24. I am totally guilty of falling head-over-heels for the "wrong" thing. Vintage is my particular weakness--if it's older than I am by a decade or more, I waaant it, even if it doesn't fit, is in lousy shape, etc.

I have the added benefit/curse of enjoying altering clothes, so I see potential in all sorts of ugly things. Which sit in a huge heap next to my sewing machine...

  25. I actually try not to buy stuff if I'm not in love with it, unless it's basic. Basic stuff gets the logical approach: Does it fit well? Does it go with a lot of things? Is it comfortable? Sometimes I love my basics, but that's just a bonus.

If it's something beyond the basics, like a dress, jacket, fancy shoes, or anything with unusual patterns or embellishments (i.e. I can only wear it occasionally), I have to ADORE it in order to justify the expenditure. Fortunately, I'm polyamorous when it comes to clothes and I fall in love pretty often :)

  26. I find that I've been a spontaneous bargain hunter, willing to try anything that fit into my budget but lately I've been waiting out my favorite pieces until they hit the sales rack, assured that means that it's "meant to be" if they have my size left by then. I've been more cautious about my choices, which leads to a well-loved but small closet. I'm still working on and developing my personal style daily, with the help of my blog friends. :)
